Moving is like any other activity, the more you do it, the better you get. Since most individuals only move a few times in their life, it is difficult to figure out the best way to approach packing and moving your things from Point A to Point B.
Here at Highland Worldwide, we have years of moving experience and a plethora of tips for moving to help make your big move as stress-free as possible!
1.) Pack an Overnight Bag
After a long, busy day of loading and unloading boxes, no one wants to spend time rummaging around for their toothbrush, pajamas and a comfy pillow.
To make the first night in your new place as easy as possible, we recommend packing an overnight bag filled with all your evening essentials. Especially if you are moving with kids, packing an entire moving essentials box may be helpful as well.
2.) Wrap Your Breakables
Whether you are moving across town or across the country, it is important to pack your breakables with care.
From packing peanuts to newspaper and egg cartons, there are plenty of ways you can do this, so take some time to search around your home and find items that you can wrap your valuables in to keep them safe on the bumpy road to your new house.
One of the easiest tips for moving to forget. When it comes to packing, most people do it room by room, writing the contents of each box on its top as they close it. But as you start packing and unpacking boxes, they are bound to get jumbled up, which is why you should also label each box with what room it belongs in.
This way, when you get into your new place you can sort them accordingly and unpack in a more organized fashion. Also, don’t forget to label boxes on their sides instead of just the tops so you can see what is inside when they’re stacked one on top of the other.
4.) Photograph Your Electronics
Before you start packing up your television, computer and other electronics take a few minutes to snap some pictures of how they are wired. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to connect your electronics without a guide, and these pictures will help you to get your new home in working order quickly.
Once the TV is hooked up to the DVD player, your little ones can enjoy their favorite movies from the living room floor while you unpack the kitchen and make dinner in your new home!
5.) Leave Your Clothes on Their Hangers
One of the best tips for moving! The fastest and often easiest way to pack up a closet is by gathering all of the hanging garments and pulling a trash bag up from the bottom to cover them. Tie it around the hangers for security. Garbage bags will keep your clothing safe and clean and will help you avoid extra work when you get to your new place.
All you have to do when it’s time to unpack is re-hang the hangers in new closet and remove the garbage bags!
6.) Handle Last Minute Tasks
From changing your address to selling items that you don’t want to take with you, there are plenty of last-minute tasks to complete in the weeks before you move.
Make a list of the things you need to get accomplished before the moving truck arrives, providing yourself with at least a month to get all the tasks done. This way, you will be able to start fresh in your new place without worrying about loose ends at your old home.
