If you are moving with a pet, you have another obstacle on your hands. Moving with a pet can be difficult and it is important to understand how to make the transition easier for your furry friend.
Here are some hints on how to make your next move comfortable for your pet.
Packing with Pets
Animals are not always great with change, especially cats.
As you’re packing, make sure to leave your animal in one room that is remaining intact until the last minute. Keep them in a comfortable setting that is familiar to them to reduce overall stress.
- If animals see you putting all of your belongings into boxes, they’ll sense that something is going on and stress over it because they will not understand.
When packing up the moving truck, make sure your animals are kept in a quiet room or at a friend’s house so they aren’t tempted to make a getaway or get underfoot.
Traveling with Pets
If you are moving long distance, the trip itself can be an issue for pets.
If you have a short move, dogs will be excited for a ride in the car and will likely do fine with it.
However, cats are not typically used to being in crates or cars unless they are going to a vet.
- In the weeks leading up to the trip, put your pets occasionally in their crate and take a short drive to get them comfortable with it.
When you get them out of the crate, give them a treat so they know that a reward comes along with the crate.
Arriving at your new home with Pets
When you arrive at your new home, your pets are going to be overwhelmed.
- Let your pet enter one room first where you have put all of their toys, water, food, and litter box if necessary.
This room will become “home” to them, initially. Let them get comfortable and gate them into this space so they can remain there as you move things in.
As time passes, slowly introduce them to other rooms in the house.
