Moving can be a busy and stressful experience for the entire family, but did you ever stop to think about how stressful it may be for your pets?
Getting used to a new place to call home can be a big adjustment for the animals in your life, but there are a few small things that you can do to make the transition as smooth as possible for your furry family members.
Go for a Walk
Before you bring Fido to your new family home, try to take a few walks around the neighborhood to help him get adjusted to the sights, sounds and smells of his new surroundings.
- If you have access to the home before move in day, you can also try placing a blanket or a comfort object inside for a few days, and then bring it back to your pet so he can examine and adjust to the new scents while still in the comforts of his old home.
Instead of packing this item up on moving day, we recommend keeping it on hand for Fido to make his transition into the new space easier and more recognizable.
Have a Friend Watch Fido
When moving day does come along, see if you can have a friend or family member watch your dog or cat for you.
This way, they will avoid the stress and bustling activity of packing up the moving truck. And you won’t have to worry about them getting out while you and the moving crew are going in and out of the house.
Explore Your New Space
Once you have all of your boxes inside the new home, it’s time to go pick up your furry family member and allow them to explore your incredible new space. Allow them to walk the entirety of the interior, staying with them for encouragement as they investigate.
- It will not be unusual if your dog barks more than you are used to at the neighbors; it is just his protective nature taking over in a strange new place.
Every animal is different, but it is pretty normal for pets to become adjusted within a few days of living in your new home.
To help them get comfortable, be sure to set up a space for their bed, toys and food, and offer them some extra attention and comfort as you all adjust to life in your new home!
